What is happening at Thoothukudi airport that has taken many by surprise?
Thoothukudi located in the southern Tamil Nadu is grabbing the attention now for this reason.
At a cost of Rs 452 crores, the airport at Thoothukudi has been expanded over an area of 886 acres now. This has caught the attention now and is spoken in huge esteem by many. In 1992, Thoothukudi first found a place in India`s air traffic map is known to us.
It is noteworthy that this airport has 3115m long runway, facilities for landing aircraft at night. Moreover, parking of as many as five A321 aircrafts is also possible here. On 26th July, the prime minister of India inaugurated the new look of Thoothukudi airport is known.
It must be recalled that in May 2025 alone this airport handled more than 20000 passengers. More than 1000 passengers used the airport on 13th May alone. In the early days, this airport was closed down because of poor patronage is known to us.
The AAI has expanded the runway due to more passengers using the airport now from 1350m to 3115m. Lands present on the eastern and western side of the airport were acquired for the runway expansion purpose. From 30m, runway width has been increased to 45m. This was especially done to handle huge aircrafts like A320 etc.
At the Thoothukudi airport, machines to scan the belongings of the passengers, necessary facilities at the check-in counters, scanning facilities in the screening hall etc have been set up now.
Yesterday morning, traffic started through the new terminal at Thoothukudi airport as the works mentioned above have been completed fully. Passengers who arrived at Chennai from Thoothukudi yesterday were received with flowers, sweets etc. Likewise, those passengers who left Chennai to Thoothukudi were also sent off with sweets etc.
