Boating Facilities to Open at Madhavaram and Manali Lakes by Tuesday
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will open its first-ever boating facilities at Madhavaram and Manali lakes by Tuesday, following successful trial runs conducted on Saturday. The twin lakes are located on either side of Kamarajar Salai in Manali.
The initiative has been implemented in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) as part of a ₹63 crore lake restoration project aimed at enhancing tourism and public recreation.
Manali Lake, spread across 29 acres, will feature 13 boats and jet skis, while the 66-acre Madhavaram Lake will offer 16 boats. Both locations have been equipped with ticket counters, snack bars, first-aid rooms, children’s play areas, parks, seating spaces, walkways, lighting, handrails, and toilet facilities.
Additionally, a 1.8-km walking track will be developed around Manali Lake, and an 800-metre footpath with play areas will be created at Madhavaram Lake. Saplings have been planted along the lake bunds, and scientific erosion-control measures have been implemented.
GCC Manali Zone Chairperson AV Arumugam said the project would benefit over 1.30 lakh residents in the zone, transforming the lakes from neglected spaces into vibrant recreational hubs for the public.
