Bank Employees Announce Three Day Nationwide Strike From September 28

Bank employees across India are set to observe a three day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, 2026, following a call by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).

The strike is primarily being organised to press for the implementation of a five-day working week in the banking sector. Bank unions have maintained that the demand was part of the wage revision settlement signed in March 2024 but has not yet been implemented.

The decision to proceed with the strike came after a conciliation meeting held on September 22 involving representatives of the bank unions, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), the Department of Financial Services and bank managements. The talks did not result in a resolution, after which the unions decided to continue with the planned strike.

The timing of the strike could affect branch-based banking services for five consecutive days, as September 26 and 27 are the fourth Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Customers may therefore face disruptions in services that require a physical visit to a bank branch or assistance from bank employees.

Banks have advised customers to complete important branch-related transactions in advance. ATM services, UPI, internet banking and mobile banking are expected to remain available, although the availability of individual services may vary between banks.
