Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure Area: Heavy Rain Likely in Tamil Nadu from Tomorrow

Posted on: 07/Jan/2026 9:12:01 AM

A low-pressure area has formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the central parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, intensifying from an upper-air cyclonic circulation. According to weather updates, the system strengthened into a deep low-pressure area by yesterday morning and is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Alert

Due to the developing system, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts, as well as Karaikal, over the next two days. An Orange Alert has been issued for these regions.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts, along with Puducherry.

Rain to Continue on January 10 and 11

Weather models indicate that coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu may continue to receive heavy rainfall on January 10 and 11, raising the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Fishermen Advisory

Strong to gale-force winds are likely over the coastal areas adjoining southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sea until January 10. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
