The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of tunnel boring work between Ayanavaram and Perambur.
The tunnel, stretching 861 metres, was completed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) named “Melagiri”, which successfully finished the underground excavation as part of Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project.

With this achievement, a total of 19 tunnel boring works have now been successfully completed under the Phase II expansion of the Chennai Metro.

Officials said the completion of this tunnel marks steady progress in the underground corridor works. Phase II of the Chennai Metro aims to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and provide faster, eco-friendly public transport across the city.
The Ayanavaram–Perambur stretch is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity in North Chennai once operations begin.
