Sensational!! Highly popular Kancheepuram Temple Idli now on path to receive GI tag!!

Who would not like to eat the idli prasadam with coarse texture, rich flavour etc that is being provided at the famous Sri Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kancheepuram?

It is now said that this iconic Temple idli or known as Kancheepuram idli, a time honoured delicacy, is now on the path of receiving GI or Geographical Indication tag. Point is that this move would cement its culinary and cultural significance.

Important piece of information is that TNAPEx or Tamil Nadu Food processing and Agri Export Promotion Corporation has submitted a formal application for GI status with support from Madurai Agribusiness incubation Forum or MABIF. It is known that MABIF is an initiative that is jointly promoted by NABARD and TNAU.

What would this GI tag recognition do?

Point to be noted is that the recognition, if granted, would offer legal protection and would boost the efforts to preserve the traditional method of preparation. This Kancheepuram idli is different from the usual soft fluffy white coloured idly due to its coarse texture, rich flavour etc

Information gathered is that this idli of about foot in length forms a part of daily ritual offerings to lord Sri Varadharaja Perumal during the Thiruvaradhanai ceremony of the temple.

Every day at 7:45am idlis are provided to the devotees along with other items like venn pongal or white pongal, Ksheera annam, Puliyodharai or puli sadham and Dhadhyonam.

Mr. S. Balaji has been making this idli at this famous Kancheepuram temple for more than 40 years and has mentioned that the recipe must be followed correctly or else the flavour would change.
