Chennai Sizzles as Meenambakkam Hits 42°C; Rain Relief Expected in Tamil Nadu

Chennai witnessed one of its hottest days of the year as Meenambakkam recorded a scorching 107°F (42°C) on Wednesday, marking the highest temperature recorded in the city this season. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nungambakkam also experienced intense heat with temperatures touching 105°F (40.7°C).

The severe summer conditions have increased discomfort levels across Chennai and other northern coastal districts due to high humidity and rising daytime temperatures.

Chennai Weather Forecast

The RMC has stated that hot and humid weather conditions are expected to continue till May 23. On Thursday, Chennai’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 40°C, while the minimum temperature may hover near 29°C.

However, there is some relief in sight as light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in parts of Chennai and nearby districts over the coming days.

Tamil Nadu Heat and Rain Update

Apart from Chennai, Vellore and Tiruttani also recorded temperatures above 106°F, making them among the hottest places in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, Kodaikanal remained the coolest location in the state with a minimum temperature of 13°C (55.4°F).

The weather department has also issued rain forecasts for several districts:

- Heavy rain with thunderstorms is likely in parts of Coimbatore Ghat areas, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Dindigul on Thursday.

- On Friday, districts including Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Tiruchy, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Erode and Nilgiris may receive heavy rainfall at isolated places.

- Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected across many parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Saturday.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours and follow weather updates regularly as Tamil Nadu continues to experience fluctuating summer conditions.
