Travelling along the Outer Ring Road or ORR, Poonamallee High Road or PH Road and Chennai- Tambaram bypass etc could become amazing in the future. Guess why?

To boost the green cover in the state of Tamil Nadu, the government of TN would plant 1.55 crores of native saplings and this would be carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme or MGNREGS. By this, the public places in TN would get beautified.

From Rajahmundry in AP, the saplings arrived in Chennai and these saplings were grown to over 6 feet in as many as 1045 nurseries run by the government. The saplings were then planted along the roadside, open spaces etc. Information gathered is that plants for Chennai would be sourced from the nurseries present in places like Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur etc.

When would the planting of saplings start?

Planting of the saplings in Chennai would begin after the NE monsoon to improve the chances of survival and to avoid grazing losses etc. This sapling planting drive would be carried out annually. This was as per an officer belonging to Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department. It must be noted that some of the saplings raised include neem, gulmohar, bottle brush, golden shower and bougainvilla etc.

It is amazing to mention here that Trichy would get the highest number of saplings and that is 27 lakhs followed by Virudhunagar 15 lakhs and Salem 10 lakhs. Chennai city and its suburbs would get about 8lakh saplings. In a week atleast 8.2lakh saplings of 6feet in height would be planted.

The workers would benefit by bringing in nursery planting under MGNREGS. Various works that could be taken up are excavation work, tree cutting and ground levelling etc for the workers. Recently their wages were increased from Rs 284 to Rs 319.
