The Director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran, has reported that the rainfall in October was 43% lower than the average expected amount. He shared this information during a press session and provided the following details:

"During October, the northeast monsoon rainy season in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal received rainfall that was 43% less than the expected average.

Normally, these regions receive 171 mm of rainfall, but in October 2023, only 98 mm of rainfall was recorded. This is the 9th time in the last 123 years that such a significant rainfall deficit has been observed.

The Kanyakumari District experienced the highest rainfall, with six other districts receiving average rainfall. Seventeen districts recorded less rainfall than the expected average.

Typical weather phenomena like the formation of low-pressure zones and depression zones were absent during October. Instead, only eastern waves were observed, leading to intermittent rains.

Currently, there is a cyclonic system prevailing in the atmosphere over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, which may lead to widespread mild to moderate rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Chennai Metro City and its suburbs will remain somewhat cloudy, with prospects for mild to moderate rain, lightning, and thunder in some areas. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 89.6 and 91.4 degrees Fahrenheit, while the minimum temperature will be between 75.2 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

As of 8:30 AM on Tuesday, October 31st, the maximum rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours in centimeters was 7 each in Thiruvallur District (Puzhal), Thiruvannamalai District (Aarani), and Thirupathur."
