Despite the peak summer heat, Chennai residents can expect uninterrupted drinking water supply for the next eight months, according to the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB). Officials said the city currently has nearly 8 TMC of water storage across its major reservoirs, along with strong support from desalination plants.

Metro Water authorities confirmed that there has been no major spike in water demand this summer, unlike previous years. The city’s reservoirs and desalination facilities are together capable of meeting Chennai’s monthly drinking water requirement of nearly 1 TMC without disruption.

3,200 Tanker Trips Daily Across Chennai

CMWSSB currently operates around 3,200 tanker lorry trips every day to ensure smooth water distribution across the city. In addition, Chennai’s desalination plants contribute a combined capacity of 350 MLD, significantly strengthening the city’s water supply network.

Officials credited the strong water availability to the heavy northeast monsoon rains received in 2025, which helped all major reservoirs reach full storage capacity.

Current Water Storage in Chennai Reservoirs

Poondi – 1,675 mcft
Cholavaram – 224 mcft
Red Hills – 2,075 mcft
Kannankottai-Thervoy Kandigai – 383 mcft
Chembarambakkam – 2,960 mcft
Veeranam – 816.95 mcft

Residents across Chennai have also welcomed the improved supply situation. Many areas that previously depended on tanker water during summer are now receiving continuous Metro Water supply even during peak heat conditions.
