A new entertainment and recreation center exclusively for senior citizens is set to be established in Chromepet, Chennai. The project, initiated by the Tambaram Corporation, aims to provide a dedicated space for the elderly to engage in social, physical, and recreational activities, helping them stay active and connected with the community.
The corporation has allocated ₹3 crore for the project, which will be constructed over an area of 1,200 square meters. The upcoming center is designed to offer a variety of amenities catering to the needs and comfort of senior citizens.
Modern Facilities for the Elderly
The ground floor of the building will include a reception and waiting area, a multi-purpose hall, a cafeteria with pantry and toilets, a lift lobby, and restrooms for men, women, and differently-abled individuals.
The first floor will feature an indoor yoga and meditation hall, an indoor gym, a library, and public restrooms - providing a peaceful and health-oriented environment.
Promoting Inclusion and Well-Being
According to corporation officials, the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure and promote inclusivity. With more senior citizens living alone due to work-driven family lifestyles, the new facility will help combat social isolation and create a community-driven support system for the elderly.
The center will also promote physical and mental well-being, offering opportunities for relaxation, exercise, and social engagement under one roof.
Future Expansion Plans
The corporation has also announced plans to develop a park with an outdoor gym and a figure-of-eight pebble walking path adjacent to the new recreation center. Construction for the project is scheduled to begin on December 15, 2025, and is expected to be completed by June 2026.
A Step Toward Happier, Healthier Aging
Once completed, this special entertainment center will provide a safe and vibrant space for Chennai’s senior citizens to enjoy meaningful activities, connect with peers, and lead healthier, happier, and more independent lives - marking a significant step toward creating an age-friendly city.
