Redevelopment work at Chennai Central Railway Station is progressing at a rapid pace under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at transforming railway stations with modern infrastructure and enhanced passenger amenities.
After successfully renovating Parangimalai and Sulurpetta railway stations, Southern Railway has intensified efforts to modernise more stations across the Chennai division. The target is to complete the full renovation of four major stations by March next year.
Stations Under Active Renovation
Out of the 17 railway stations selected under the Amrit Bharat project, redevelopment work is currently underway at:
- Park
- Guindy
- Chennai Beach
- Guduvancheri
According to a senior official from the Chennai division, most civil works have already been completed and lifts have been installed at these stations.
Key Upgrades at Park Railway Station
At Park Railway Station, almost all major works have been completed, except for the construction of a new façade and roofing near Platform 1. Completed upgrades include:
- New pedestrian pathways
- Modern ticket counters
- Newly built toilets
- Installation of lifts
More Stations Being Upgraded Simultaneously
Renovation works are also progressing simultaneously at:
- Jolarpettai
- Gummidipoondi
- Tiruttani
- Arakkonam
- Tiruvallur
- Ambattur
- Perambur
Focus on Passenger Comfort & Accessibility
The primary objective of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is to enhance passenger convenience and safety. The redevelopment focuses on:
- Modern architectural façades
- Improved passenger movement
- Enhanced security features
- Additional lifts and escalators
Special emphasis is being placed on senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, ensuring easy access across platforms.
Improved Last-Mile Connectivity
To improve last-mile connectivity, upgraded parking facilities are also being developed. In addition, lifts have been installed at several other stations, including:
Ennore, Minjur, Potheri, Maraimalai Nagar, Nayudupetta, Palavanthangal, Annanur, Ammur, Vaniyambadi, Puthur, and Kadambattur.
