Many people visit the highly popular Kasimedu fish market to buy fish and this place is always congested. Yesterday, due to shortage in the supply at this fish market the seafood prices increased by 15%.

It was brought out by some fish traders that the majority of fishermen went to the sea and returned back with a limited amount of fish. The month of Puratasi would be completed by next week and it is now said that the prices would increase further.

Mr. Vishnu, a wholesale trader at Kasimedu fish market expressed his views. He spoke about how when compared to last week the market received less 1000 customers due to shortage in the fish supply. He added that for the past 2 weeks there was huge demand for seafood as just 35percent of fishermen went into the sea. The reason was due to the increase in the diesel rates. He concluded that the majority of fishermen went into the sea yesterday but they could catch less than 70 tonnes.

Yesterday at this famous market, vanjaram fish or seer fish was sold for Rs 700 to Rs 800 per kg. Red snapper and crab were sold for Rs 300 per kg. Customers purchased prawns for Rs 300 to Rs 500 per kg. Nethili or anchovy fish were sold at Rs 200 to Rs 250 per kg. It must be noted that lady fish or kizhanga were sold at Rs 400 per kg and black pomfret was sold at Rs 600 per kg. The cost of white pomfret was Rs 900 per kg. It is clear that on the weekdays, the prices would reduce by 10 percent.

As per a fish trader at Kasimedu fish market, in the Puratasi month the sale of fishes and prices would be high. The supply shortage this year has turned things upside down.
