Currently, there are 15 zones in the GCC or greater Chennai Corporation and the number of zones might increase in the near future.
The news is that GCC is having plans to increase the number of zones to make the administration easier. This increase in the GCC zones would take place after the local body elections for Municipal Corporations in 2022. It was pointed out by a source from the GCC that each of the 22 assembly constituencies within the limits of the corporation would become a separate zone. From the current 15 GCC zones, the number would go to 22 zones.
It must be taken into note that at present the divisions of the same constituencies fall under 2 or 3 zones. The coordination between the elected representatives and zonal officials would become difficult. It was said that the decision has been mooted at the government level. This was according to a source. It has been mentioned by the source that the plan was to conduct delimitation before the corporation elections. Point is that instructions have been issued to conduct delimitation after the local body elections including the Chennai Corporation. The elections would be held in the month of January 2022.
It must not be forgotten that in 2018 GCC completed delimitation of divisions and boundaries of many divisions get modified based on the population. Boundaries of 119 divisions were changed plus the division numbers also during the drive. It must be noted that the boundaries of Madhavaram and Manali zones have changed by adding division 29, new number 22
