Hospital attendants in Chennai complain of burnout due to heavy workload now

Posted on: 25/May/2021 9:29:35 AM
Imagine working throughout the day without sleep!!

This is what the caretakers are doing now in the hospitals in Chennai. The recent rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in Chennai has made the lives of many hospital attendants tough now.

The attendants of the Covid-19 patients under treatment have been prohibited inside the Corona wards of the hospitals now. It is believed that these attendants could play a huge role in the transmission of the infection. Therefore, the hospital attendants have been taking care of these Covid patients. This has increased their workloads and many have complained about stress and burnouts etc.

On 15th May 2021, DPH, Dr. T.S. Selvavinayagam had issued an order prohibiting visitors and attendants from entering the isolation wards in the hospitals as they might become spreaders.

It has been brought to light by some caretakers at the hospitals that the hospitals do not have proper facilities or an adequate number of professional caretakers.

According to a professional caretaker at a hospital in Chennai, after the announcement that attendants were not allowed inside the isolation wards he and others like him stay in the hospital to take care of the patients round the clock. Truth is that the attenders were allowed to give only home cooked food for the patients.

It is learnt that caretakers are appointed either by the hospitals or by the patient’s kin from manpower agencies. It is known that the manpower agencies have recently mushroomed in Chennai.

The professional caretaker spoke about how for the last 2 weeks the hospital has got only limited numbers of care takers for taking care of covid-19 patients. He explained that the caretakers have been doing their work even without sleep. The caretakers face huge stress inspite of hospital management paying them for overtime.

It was later pointed out by another professional caretaker that every day they come across many below the age of 35 with Covid-19 infection and many of them also die. He threw light on how it was tough to manage so many Covid-19 patients with limited manpower. For this reason only many quit their jobs also.
