Co optex sees high demand of traditional cotton saree varieties this festive season

The festive season has seen a sudden demand for traditional handloom weaves, including cotton. Experts have said that this may be due to a project started by the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers` Cooperative Society Ltd. or Cooptex.

Weavers from Kanchipuram are thrilled with the demand. Every time we say we make Kancheepuram cotton saris, people look surprised as the district is known more for the silk variety... Pictures of some of our saris were put up on Facebook. We are now getting orders from as far as Mumbai and Delhi... We have to work overtime to meet the demand as most villagers have left this profession.

Ancient weaves are high in demand this season. Apart from Kanchi cotton, other varieties include Sungudi, Kodalikarupur, Kandangi, Sungudi, Chinnalampatti and Koorai Nadu. Co optex sells sarees of this variety along with tags that have the details of the weavers - name and how long they have been in this profession. Co optex feels that these tags encourage buyers.

The highest selling variety has been Chettinad`s Kandangi cotton. About 1000 orders have been placed for these sarees which are priced between Rs. 600 and Rs. 3000 depending on the craftsmanship and raw materials used. In contrast, Madurai`s Sungudi sarees sold the least amount, with just 75 orders till date.

A Co optex official said, The core features like the weave and feel of the fabric are retained. We tweak the design and colour to suit the needs and appeal to the aesthetics of modern-day working women... We have also added Thank you on the tags. The note is for the customer for being part of the struggle to continue a lineage.
