Posted on: 15/Mar/2023 9:41:24 AM
The residents from the southern , eastern and suburban places in Chennai have been experiencing a delay in the supply of Aavin milk in the past few days. There has been a reduction in the procurement of Aavin milk by 9 to 10litres. As a result, there is now a huge impact on the milk supply in the city.

The residents have mentioned that the retail supply of aavin milk has been delayed up to 3 hours also and for the cardholders upto 2 hours also.

The sources have explained that the Aavin milk dairies in places like Sholinganallur, Madhavaram, Ambattur and Kakkalur from where the milk is supplied to Chennai have been receiving raw milk lats from the districts. Information collected is that the district cooperative milk producers unions in places like Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Krishnangiri, Salem and surrounding areas etc that have been supplying milk to Chennai are reeling under shortage. This has forced Aavin to get milk from far away districts leading to delays.

In the northern districts near Chennai, the district milk unions used to have a reserve of 50000 to 85000 litres of milk. This reserve was utilised whenever the procurement of milk reduces in the lean season from April to September. Within a few days, the reserved milk was replenished by diverting milk from cooperative unions in Virudhunagar, Madurai and other districts.

According to an official from Aavin, the district unions of Salem, Vellore and Thiruvannamalai have exhausted their surplus milk recently. As the dairy farmers have demanded a hike in the procurement price, the milk supply from Madurai, Thoothukudi and other districts have been affected. He concluded that this has led to a delay in the Aavin milk supply in Chennai now.

On Tuesdays after 8am only, the residents in the places like Velachery, Thiruvanmiyur, Thoraippakam etc were able to purchase Aavin milk. Until 10am , the milk supply did not start in some places in Chennai. From 37 lakhs litre, the daily milk procurement of Aavin has come down now to 27 lakhs litre. There is also a milk shortage in northern states now.
