Autos and cabs in Chennai from today, 1st June

It has been more than 2 months since autos and cabs operated in the city of Chennai. This long wait is over now.
From 1st June 2020, cabs and autos would be operated in Chennai for the public. It is now said that due to the shortage of drivers the fares would be higher than in the past. Around 60 percent of the cab drivers who worked in Chennai city were stranded in their native places. There is still no clarity about the drivers returning back to work from Monday onwards. This was brought out by Mr. T. Ramanujam belonging to TN Call Taxi Drivers Association.
Information gathered is few drivers have gone for long distance trips and 5000 odd drivers have ended their lease agreements with the cab aggregators due to the huge losses they faced even before the lock down.
It has been pointed out by some drivers that they were unsure about the demand and the demand hasn�t increased in the past 1 week of time. In the last one week, the cab services were given permission for trips to the airport are known. Just 20 to 30 booking trips were made per day.
The demand for cabs might be more in this week as mire IT employees as well as professionals belonging to other fields would be returning back to their works.
A cab driver of Ekkaduthangal spoke about how getting return trip would be difficult plus how he has been waiting to get hand sanitizers from the government.
Point is the government has made it compulsory for auto/cab drivers to give hand sanitizers to the customers at the end of the trip. Efforts have been taken to issue essentials and PPE at their parking yards and in the petrol bunks. This was mentioned by a source belonging to Ola Cabs.
