Normal life hit by total shutdown in Tamil Nadu

On 7th August 2018, former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, kalaignar M. Karunanidhi passed away. The latest news is this had affected the normal life of people in the state of TN. The city of Chennai and rest of TN had complete shutdown and there was deserted look everywhere. It must be noted that the state transport department had suspended services in TN due to the fear of violence in some places. The commuters had very tough time as the other means of transport such as omni buses, cabs, autos, taxi services were also not in service.

Most state run buses stopped at nearby bus stands and bus depots and it is clear that the passengers did not have food or other basic amenities also on Tuesday and on entire Wednesday. This was after the announcement of the death of former chief minister of TN at 6.10 pm in the evening on Tuesday, 7th August. There was not even a single MTC bus service in Chennai city and this had created difficulties for those who work in private companies.

A Chennai based techie expressed his feelings and spoke about how he and other passengers were made to take a taxi from Tindivanam to CMBT in Chennai city as the bus they were travelling from Madurai to Chennai stopped after the news regarding the death of kalaignar Karunanidhi. On Wednesday, omni buses, taxis plus autos were off the road and it created huge difficulties for the public.

On Wednesday after 7pm in the evening omni buses were operated to pick the passengers who were left stranded from Tuesday evening after the death of kalaignar Karunanidhi. This was confirmed by Mr. Afzal who is the president of TN Omni Bus Owners Association.

According to Mr. Davidar who is the additional chief secretary (transport), on a single day about 70 government buses were damaged in TN and the situation is being monitored. He later spoke about the possibility of operating buses on Thursday late night or early morning.

It is known that Wednesday, 8th August 2018, was declared as holiday by the TN government. As a result of this holiday there was not a single MTC bus on the road. There were many arterial roads with deserted look with just few two wheelers and cars. People also faced difficulties in having their food as the eateries were not opened. The railway station canteens and amma canteens were flooded with people as the people had food from these. The government declared seven- day- mourning and a state funeral for the former chief minister of TN on Wednesday.

There were no restaurants, malls, supermarkets, public transport services etc as these services were withdrawn as all roads led to Rajaji Hall where mortal remains of former chief minister of TN was kept for the public. Many ATMs and medical shops were also closed and people found their lives difficult. There were also few who travelled few kilometres to reach medical shops.

A software engineer spoke about how she had bought groceries for two days in advance as she expected about this shut down.
