Purchasing about 20lakhs laptops for the college students in TN - Whats exactly happening now?
Popular international companies like Dell and Acer are making superb news now. It is important to mention that these 2 companies have been selected to purchase about 20lakhs laptops/madikanini for the college students in Tamil Nadu.
It must be recalled that during the Tamil Nadu budget session for 2025-26 it was planned to provide high tech devices to all students belonging to arts, science, engineering, medical and agriculture colleges in TN. It was announced that about 20lakh college students would be provided with tablets or laptops in the next 2 years in the first phase.
In the first phase, a huge amount of Rs 2000 cr has been allotted for this and this was mentioned by the minister Mr. Thangam Thennarasu. This was appreciated by the students. It must be remembered that free laptops were provided to the students from the year 2011 onwards but were stopped in 2018 due to financial problems.
It was decided to provide free laptops once again to the students after the current government came into power in 2021. Tamil Nadu government based Elcot Company requested an international tender to purchase 20lakh laptops and 3 companies have applied for the tender to supply 20lakh laptops. Information is that international companies like Dell, Acer and HP have applied for the tender. Various features that would be present in these free laptops are 8 GB RAM, 256 GB Hard Disk (SSD), 14/15.6 inch screen, i3 Intel or AMD processor, Bluetooth 5.0, Windows 11 OS, 720 p HD camera etc. A slogan Tamil Nadu Government Laptop would be written also.
Point is that many companies have submitted their price lists. Information collected is that Dell has submitted its price list as Rs 40826 for the laptop of 15.6in screen. Acer has submitted its price list as Rs 23385 for a laptop of 14in screen.
