Chennai Metro Increases Fine for Rule Violations to Rs 2,500

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has increased the penalty for passengers who violate metro travel rules. The revised fine has been increased from Rs 500 to a maximum of Rs 2,500.

According to the official notification, passengers are urged to follow metro travel regulations and respect the comfort and convenience of fellow commuters. Under Section 59 of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, causing inconvenience or disturbance to other passengers is considered a punishable offence.

The Metro Rail authorities have identified several activities that may attract penalties, including:

- Talking loudly on mobile phones inside metro trains or station premises.

- Playing music or watching videos without using headphones.

- Using the phone`s loudspeaker or speaker mode inside metro trains or metro stations.

- Creating excessive noise or engaging in any activity that disturbs fellow passengers.

The revised penalty follows a notification issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on June 19 under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026, which amended the provisions related to passenger misconduct in metro rail systems.

Under the amended rules, passengers found causing inconvenience to others, such as playing audio aloud without headphones, may now be fined up to Rs 2,500, replacing the earlier maximum fine of Rs 500.

In addition to the monetary penalty, passengers violating these rules may also be removed from metro premises by authorised officials.

CMRL has requested all passengers to use headphones while listening to audio, avoid speaking loudly on mobile phones, and refrain from using speaker mode inside metro trains and station premises to ensure a safe, comfortable, and peaceful travel experience for everyone.
