Chennai Corporation Collects 36.64 Metric Tonnes of Bulky Waste from 105 Locations

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) collected 36.64 metric tonnes of bulky household waste from 105 locations across Chennai on Saturday, July 25, as part of its weekly special waste collection initiative.

The collected waste included old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture, clothes and other large household items that are difficult to dispose of through regular garbage collection.

43 Vehicles Deployed for Waste Collection

According to GCC, 43 vehicles were deployed to collect bulky waste from residents who had registered their requests in advance.

After collection, the waste was transported to the Kodungaiyur facility, where it was processed and incinerated as part of the Corporation`s waste management operations.

Weekly Bulky Waste Collection in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation launched the weekly bulky waste collection initiative in October 2025 to help residents safely dispose of large and unwanted household items.

Under the initiative, GCC sanitation workers visit registered households every Saturday and collect eligible bulky waste directly from homes.

The service helps prevent residents from dumping old furniture, mattresses and other large waste items on roadsides, vacant plots and public spaces.

How to Request GCC Bulky Waste Collection

Chennai residents can request the service through the Namma Chennai app, by calling the GCC helpline at 1913, or by sending a WhatsApp message to 94450 61913.

Residents should register their collection request in advance. GCC workers will then visit the registered location on Saturday to collect the waste.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has encouraged residents to make use of the service and support cleaner streets and better waste management across Chennai.
