Localities like Kodungaiyur, Kolathur, Pallikaranai, Velachery etc to get flood control plans!!
As many as 120 spots across Chennai would have flood control plans from GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation as NE monsoon season is fast approaching. Work has started now to deploy hundreds of motor pumps and GCC is now speeding up the SWD or storm water drain works.
According to some officials from GCC, many vulnerable spots across Chennai are being concentrated now and these include Kodungaiyur, Vyasarpadi, Kolathur, Perambur etc. Few spots in south Chennai like Velachery, Pallikaranai etc would also be given huge importance. It was confirmed by the officials that GCC has distributed 500 dewatering tractor motor pumps across all 15 GCC zones.
According to Rajeswari, chief engineer (general), GCC, the mitigation works have been intensified and there won`t be any water stagnation during the monsoon season. There is a need now for double manpower and for this the GCC has given instructions to the contractors. Soon, in the flood prone places in Chennai, 150 additional motor pumps would be stationed. Point is that tenders have been floated and work orders have been issued also.
It was revealed by Mr. A.S. Murugan, superintendent engineer, SWD, GCC that the civic body has expedited ongoing SWD projects in Chennai. Information is that across 3 packages, construction of 246km of SWD has been completed and about 90km has been pending across 2 packages. With just tractor pumps kept ready. The flood mitigation works would be inadequate in several areas and this was as per some residents.
