ITR Filing 2026: Haven't Linked Your Aadhaar and PAN Yet? Here's How to Do It Online

As the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing season is underway, taxpayers who have not yet linked their Aadhaar with their Permanent Account Number (PAN) should complete the process without further delay.

The Government of India has made Aadhaar-PAN linking mandatory. If your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, it may become inoperative, which can lead to difficulties in filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), claiming tax refunds, receiving TDS credits, and carrying out various financial transactions.

Although the free deadline for linking Aadhaar and PAN has expired, taxpayers can still complete the process by paying a late fee of ₹1,000 through the Income Tax Department`s e-Filing portal.

How to Link Aadhaar with PAN Online

Follow these simple steps to link your Aadhaar and PAN:

1. Visit the Income Tax Department`s e-Filing Portal.
2. On the homepage, click Quick Links and select Link Aadhaar.
3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers, then click Validate.
4. Select Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
5. Enter your PAN and registered mobile number, verify the OTP, and proceed to the e-Pay Tax section.
6. Choose the applicable Assessment Year or Financial Year.
7. Under Tax Payment, select Fee for Delay in Linking PAN with Aadhaar.
8. Pay the prescribed ₹1,000 fee using your preferred payment method.
9. After successful payment, return to Quick Links > Link Aadhaar.
10. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar details again and click Validate.
11. Once the payment is verified, click Continue.
12. Fill in the required details and click Submit.
13. Verify the request using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

Your request for Aadhaar-PAN linking will then be successfully submitted.

How to Check Aadhaar-PAN Link Status

To verify whether your Aadhaar and PAN have been linked:

- Visit the Income Tax Department`s e-Filing Portal.
- Click Quick Links > Link Aadhaar / View Status.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers.
- Click View Link Aadhaar Status to check the current status.

Why Aadhaar-PAN Linking Is Important

Linking your Aadhaar with PAN helps you:

- File your Income Tax Return (ITR) without issues.
- Receive Income Tax refunds smoothly.
- Claim TDS credits without delays.
- Keep your PAN active and valid.
- Avoid disruptions in banking and other financial transactions.

Taxpayers planning to file their ITR for the current assessment year should first verify their Aadhaar-PAN linking status. If the two documents are not linked, completing the process by paying the applicable ₹1,000 fee can help avoid unnecessary delays and complications.
