Business Tips: Don’t Just Share the Goal - Translate the Dream into Milestones

The Secret of a Happy Leader Over a Frustrated Leader

By J Sampath

Every passionate businessman carries a dream.

You see the destination before others can see it. You think about the goal repeatedly. You imagine how the business will look when you reach it. You process the possibilities, challenges and opportunities deeply in your mind.

Naturally, you become excited about the goal.

And you keep talking about it.

There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, passion and excitement are essential qualities of an entrepreneur.

But there is an important leadership lesson hidden here:

The people working with you may hear your goal, but they may not see your dream the way you see it.

You Have Lived With the Dream. They Have Only Heard About It.

As a business owner, you may have spent hundreds of hours thinking about your goal.

You have imagined the destination.

You have considered different possibilities.

You have emotionally experienced success even before reaching it.

But your employees, vendors, consultants, service providers and other people working with you have not travelled through all those thoughts.

They may have heard you explain the goal for 10 minutes.

You have probably been thinking about it for 10 months.

That difference matters.

When we forget this difference, frustration begins.

“Why Don`t They Understand?”

Sometimes a leader explains something enthusiastically and assumes that everyone has understood it with the same depth.

A few days later, the work may not happen as expected.

Then comes the frustration:

"I explained everything!"

"Why don`t they understand?"

"Why can`t they think ahead?"

"Why do I have to keep telling them?"

Eventually, we may even start believing that the people around us are less capable.

But that may not be true at all.

The problem may not be capability. The problem may simply be alignment.

They received the information, but perhaps not the complete picture.

They heard your words, but they do not carry the years of thinking, experience, emotion and imagination behind those words.

Communicate the Goal -  Then Come Back to the Milestone

Continue talking about the goal. Your vision is important.

But don`t stop with the vision.

Convert the dream into milestones.

Convert every milestone into actions.

Convert those actions into clear responsibilities.

Discuss:

  • What exactly are we trying to achieve now?

  • What is the next milestone?

  • What actions are required to reach it?

  • Who is responsible for each action?

  • When should it be completed?

  • What could go wrong?

  • What is our contingency plan?

  • How will we know that this milestone has been achieved?

Now the dream starts becoming executable.

Don`t Ask Everyone to Carry the Entire Dream

This is another important leadership shift.

Everyone working with you does not necessarily need to carry the entire dream in their head every day.

They need to understand the destination, certainly.

But more importantly, they must clearly understand their role in reaching the next milestone.

A mason constructing a building does not need to constantly visualise the completed building exactly as the architect does.

But the mason must know precisely what has to be built today.

Business is similar.

The leader holds the larger vision.

The team executes the milestones that make the vision real.

Milestones Create Victories

When a team completes a milestone, don`t immediately rush to the next problem.

Recognise it.

Celebrate it.

Tell them:

“We achieved this together.”

A milestone may look small compared with your ultimate dream, but for the people working on it, completing that milestone creates confidence.

Victory creates energy.

Energy creates involvement.

Involvement creates ownership.

And ownership gradually develops people who are capable of handling bigger milestones.

This is how a leader builds a future-ready team.

Leadership Is Also Translation

One of the most important responsibilities of a business leader is to become a translator of dreams.

Translate:

Dream → Goal

Goal → Milestones

Milestones → Action Plans

Action Plans → Individual Responsibilities

Responsibilities → Completed Tasks

Completed Tasks → Victories

Victories → Confidence

Confidence → Bigger Milestones

And one day, all those milestones together become the dream you originally carried in your mind.

The Difference Between Two Leaders

A frustrated leader keeps looking at the destination and wondering:

“Why can`t everyone see what I see?”

A happy and effective leader understands:

“They don`t have to see everything exactly as I see it. My responsibility is to help them clearly see what we need to achieve next.”

That small change in leadership thinking can transform the working environment.

Communicate the dream.

Share your excitement.

Keep the destination visible.

But spend more time discussing the next milestone, the next action and the next responsibility.

And whenever your people achieve a milestone, celebrate that victory with them.

Because leadership is not about expecting everyone to carry your dream with the same depth as you.

Leadership is about converting the dream you carry into achievable victories that everyone can experience together.

That could be one of the simplest secrets behind becoming a happy leader instead of a frustrated leader.
