Escalators to Be Installed at Chromepet and Tharamani Flyovers in Chennai at a Cost of ₹7.5 Crore

Commuters using foot overbridges (FOBs) at the busy Chromepet and Tharamani flyovers in Chennai can soon look forward to easier access, as the Highways Department has announced the installation of new escalators at these locations.

The department has placed an order for five pairs of escalators, at an estimated cost of ₹7.5 crore. The new facility is expected to greatly benefit senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities, making it easier for them to cross the flyovers safely and comfortably.

Old Escalators Were Non-Functional

The previously installed escalators at these flyovers had been out of service for several months, causing inconvenience to pedestrians. In many cases, people were forced to use the stationary escalators as regular staircases.

Acknowledging the issue, the Highways Department has taken swift action. Officials confirmed that the old escalators will be removed, and work on installing the new ones will begin shortly.

Installation Timeline

According to officials, installing one pair of escalators will take approximately 10 to 15 days. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

Reason for Earlier Malfunctions

Officials explained that the frequent breakdown of the old escalators was mainly due to the accumulation of garbage and dust, which affected the smooth functioning of the mechanical parts.

The company responsible for installing the new escalators will also handle maintenance for the first year. After this period, the Highways Department will take over regular maintenance, ensuring uninterrupted service for the public.
