Long-pending renovation works at the Gengu Reddy subway near Nehru Park in Chennai and the Nungambakkam subway are set to move into execution in the coming weeks, with the Greater Chennai Corporation awaiting final clearance from the Greater Chennai Traffic Police for road re-laying and trial runs.
The Rs 2 crore renovation of the Gengu Reddy subway is expected to begin shortly after a week-long traffic trial run. Electrical works have already been completed, and mural painting is under way. Once finished, the subway will offer smoother connectivity towards Chetpet, Nungambakkam, Poonamallee High Road, and nearby areas. The project is scheduled to be completed within three months.
Meanwhile, renovation of the Nungambakkam subway is likely to start in May during school summer holidays, as traffic police have denied immediate permission due to heavy peak-hour congestion. Both subways, which handle over one lakh vehicles daily, suffer from potholes and water stagnation, and residents have urged the civic body to implement durable, long-term solutions instead of temporary repairs.
