The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that a detailed safety inspection will be conducted on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro rail corridor for three days starting February 11. As part of this process, 10 metro stations along the stretch will undergo inspection, officials said.
The inspection will be carried out by the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) as part of the approval process before commencing passenger services.
About the Metro Corridor
Chennai Metro Phase 2 includes three major corridors, and construction work is progressing rapidly. One of the key sections is the 26-km stretch from Marina Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass Road.
Within this, the 16-km Vadapalani–Poonamallee section has been completed and is now ready for safety trials and certification.
Inspection Schedule
February 11: Track inspection using a trolley by the CRS team
February 12: Inspection of 10 metro stations between Vadapalani and Poonamallee
February 13: Trial run of metro trains on the corridor
The inspection will be conducted by a six-member CRS team led by A.M. Chaudhary, who will arrive in Chennai from Bengaluru.
Next Steps
According to CMRL Project Director Arjun, once inspections are completed between February 11 and 13, the corridor is expected to receive the mandatory safety certificate. A final decision on the commencement of metro train services on this stretch will be taken after certification.
Officials said the inspection marks a major milestone for Chennai Metro Phase 2, bringing the Poonamallee–Vadapalani corridor closer to public operations and improved urban connectivity.
