Chennai Metro Passengers Demand Midnight Services, Better Connectivity and Improved Facilities

Drawing inspiration from the recent blockbuster movie Obsession, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) invited passengers to share their wishes for improving Metro services through its "One Wish Willow" campaign. Commuters were encouraged to suggest ideas that could enhance the overall Metro experience, including new routes, better connectivity, greener travel, and other improvements.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with passengers submitting a wide range of practical and thoughtful suggestions to make Metro travel more convenient and commuter-friendly.

One of the most common requests was to extend Metro services until midnight, instead of the current last train at 11 p.m. Many passengers also suggested operating trains at reduced frequency during late-night hours.

"Since the Metro is the safest mode of public transportation, extending services would be especially beneficial for women and passengers travelling from the airport or other distant locations. CMRL should consider this option in the future," wrote one commuter.

A significant number of passengers also raised concerns about commuters using mobile phones on speaker without headphones. Responding to repeated requests from passengers, CMRL has now introduced a fine of up to ₹2,500 for using mobile phones on speaker inside Metro trains.

"Well, that`s one wish fulfilled," said regular commuter Rohan Ravikumar, adding that enforcing such discipline was both necessary and welcome.

Other suggestions included installing escalators for both upward and downward movement at all existing and upcoming Metro stations, improving lift accessibility, allowing bicycles inside Metro stations, ensuring uninterrupted air conditioning, providing mobile charging points for long-distance travellers, and strengthening last-mile connectivity, particularly through additional mini-bus services to Velachery and Porur.

Passengers also recommended promoting escalator etiquette by encouraging commuters to "Walk Left, Stand Right," introducing a dedicated Metro radio service, and providing electric buggy vehicles at larger Metro stations to reduce walking distances.

In addition to infrastructure-related suggestions, commuters shared a few unique wishes, including the opportunity to ride alongside a train operator, internship opportunities at CMRL, and allowing pets to travel with their owners.
