Madras to Chennai: How Chennai Got Its Name

Chennai, one of India’s oldest and most vibrant metropolitan cities, officially received its present name on 17 July 1996. Until then, the city was widely known as Madras. The renaming marked an important moment in Tamil Nadu’s history and reflected a broader effort to restore locally rooted names and cultural identity.

Why Was Madras Renamed Chennai?

The decision to change the city’s name was closely associated with the idea of moving away from colonial-era names and giving greater recognition to the region’s Tamil heritage.

The change took place under the DMK government led by M. Karunanidhi. It followed the earlier renaming of Madras State as Tamil Nadu in 1969, part of a wider emphasis on Tamil identity and language.

Interestingly, the name Chennai was not entirely new. Many people had already used Chennai or Chennapatnam in everyday speech before the official change. The 1996 government notification simply gave formal recognition to the name.

Where Did the Name Chennai Come From?

The name Chennai is generally linked to Chennapattanam or Chennapatnam, a settlement that developed around Fort St. George.

One commonly cited historical explanation connects the name with Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, a 16th-century Nayak ruler whose family controlled parts of the coastal region. His son, Damarla Venkatadri Nayak, played an important role in the history of the area and its early interactions with the British East India Company.

The exact origins of the name have been debated by historians, but the connection with Chennapattanam remains one of the most widely accepted explanations.

What About the Name Madras?

The name Madras is generally associated with Madrasapattinam, an older settlement located near Chennapattanam. The British East India Company established itself in the area and developed Fort St. George, after which the two settlements gradually grew into the larger city.

There are also other theories about the origin of the word Madras, including possible Portuguese connections. However, the Madrasapattinam explanation remains one of the most commonly cited accounts.

The Official Change in 1996

On 17 July 1996, the Tamil Nadu government officially issued the notification changing the city’s name from Madras to Chennai.

The move came during a period when several Indian cities were reclaiming or adopting names with stronger local and historical associations. Similar changes included Bombay becoming Mumbai and Calcutta becoming Kolkata.

The renaming of Madras was therefore more than a simple change of name. It reflected the city’s evolving identity and its connection with Tamil history and culture.

A Brief Timeline

1639: The British East India Company acquired land in the area, leading to the development of settlements associated with Madrasapattinam and Chennapattanam.

1969: Madras State was officially renamed Tamil Nadu.

17 July 1996: The city of Madras was officially renamed Chennai.

From Madras to Chennai

Today, Chennai is recognised as one of India’s major cultural, economic and industrial centres. While the name Madras remains deeply embedded in the city’s history, Chennai has become the name that represents its modern identity.

The change from Madras to Chennai also serves as a reminder of how cities evolve - not only through buildings, industries and infrastructure, but also through the names by which generations know and remember them.
