CMRL Plans Major Metro Network Expansion Towards Chengalpattu and Wimco Nagar

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has taken another significant step toward expanding the city`s metro network by inviting tenders for the preparation of two Detailed Project Reports (DPRs). The proposed projects aim to extend metro connectivity to Chengalpattu in the south and Wimco Nagar in North Chennai, marking the next phase of Chennai Metro’s long-term expansion plans.

The larger of the two proposed projects involves extending the planned Kilambakkam Metro station to Chengalpattu. The DPR will study a nearly 27-kilometre extension under Corridor-1, with the tender estimated at ₹2.16 crore. This proposal is a continuation of the Chennai Airport–Kilambakkam Metro project, for which CMRL submitted a DPR to the Tamil Nadu government in February 2025.

The Airport–Kilambakkam corridor is planned as a 15.46-kilometre elevated metro line with 13 stations and an integrated elevated road. The project, estimated to cost ₹9,335 crore, is designed to provide seamless connectivity between Chennai Airport and the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. According to CMRL officials, approval from the Central Government is currently awaited.

The second DPR focuses on extending Corridor-5 of Phase II from Assisi Nagar to Wimco Nagar in North Chennai. The proposed 11-kilometre extension has been tendered at an estimated cost of ₹88 lakh. The project is expected to significantly improve public transport access in North Chennai by connecting the corridor directly to the existing Wimco Nagar Metro station.

Wimco Nagar is also emerging as a major multimodal transportation hub. Indian Railways, Chennai Metro Rail, and the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) are working towards integrating suburban rail, regional transit, and urban mobility services at this strategic location, creating a seamless interchange for commuters.

According to sources, both DPRs are expected to be completed within four months. Once finalized and approved, these projects could substantially enhance metro connectivity across the Chennai Metropolitan Region, supporting future growth and improving travel options for thousands of commuters.
