Tamil Nadu Extends 100% Road Tax Exemption for Electric Vehicles Till 2027
The Tamil Nadu government has extended the 100% road tax exemption for electric vehicles (EVs) for an additional two years, making the benefit valid until December 31, 2027. The decision is aimed at boosting the adoption of environment-friendly, battery-operated vehicles and reducing air pollution across the state.
As part of its long-term green mobility strategy, the Tamil Nadu Government introduced the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy in 2019. To encourage EV sales, a full road tax waiver was first offered until December 31, 2022, and later extended till December 31, 2025. With the deadline approaching, vehicle manufacturers and industry bodies requested the government to continue the incentive.
Accepting the request, the state has now extended the 100% road tax exemption for electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers until December 31, 2027. The official government order announcing the extension was issued by Dheeraj Kumar.
This extension is expected to significantly reduce the purchase cost of electric vehicles, encourage more consumers to switch to EVs, cut fuel expenses, and help Tamil Nadu move towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
