New Year 2026: Tamil Nadu Police Impose Strict Security Measures & Celebration Rules Across Chennai and State

To ensure a safe and peaceful New Year celebration, the Tamil Nadu Police has rolled out extensive security arrangements across Tamil Nadu. From Wednesday evening (December 31), heightened security will be in place statewide with over 1.10 lakh police personnel and 10,000 Home Guards deployed.

Statewide Security Highlights

- 1.10 lakh police personnel and 10,000 Home Guards on duty across Tamil Nadu

- Intensive vehicle checks at major locations and road junctions

- Public advised to avoid unnecessary travel at night

- New Year celebrations permitted only till 1:00 AM (Jan 1)

- Strict action against drunk driving, dangerous stunts, and illegal racing

Chennai: Tight Security & Restrictions

- In Chennai, the Greater Chennai Police has deployed:

- 19,000 police personnel and 1,500 Home Guards

- Vehicle checks at 425 locations across the city

- 30 special surveillance teams to prevent bike racing in areas like Guindy, Adyar, Taramani, Neelankarai, Thoraipakkam, Maduravoyal Bypass, and GST Road

- 100 key locations, including temples, churches, and public places, under enhanced protection

Beach & Public Space Restrictions

- No entry into sea waters or bathing from Dec 31 evening to Jan 1 morning

- Extra security at Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar, Neelankarai, and Thiruvanmiyur

- Horse-mounted patrols and temporary police help desks on beach sands

- Drone surveillance along ECR from Panaiyur to Kovalam

Celebration Rules & Prohibitions

- Celebrations allowed only till 1:00 AM; no events after that

- Firecrackers banned in public and residential areas

- Loudspeakers and high-decibel sound systems prohibited

- Apartment and residential celebrations require prior police permission

Star hotels, resorts, and entertainment venues must strictly follow police guidelines

Zero Tolerance for Violations

- Drunk driving: vehicle seizure and arrest

- Bike racing & stunts: strict legal action

- Warning issued that criminal cases may affect future job prospects

Police officials emphasized that these measures are aimed at protecting women, children, and the general public, while allowing citizens to welcome the New Year responsibly.
