Chennai Metro Sets New Passenger Record: Over 10.63 Million Riders in July 2026

Chennai Metro Rail has achieved a new milestone by recording its highest-ever monthly ridership. During July 2026, a total of 10,637,647 passengers (1.06 crore) travelled on the Chennai Metro network, reflecting the growing preference for safe, fast, and reliable public transportation across the city.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), July 24, 2026, witnessed the highest single-day ridership ever recorded, with 384,412 passengers using the metro services. This record highlights the increasing dependence of Chennai commuters on metro rail for daily travel.

CMRL also stated that passengers purchasing QR tickets through WhatsApp, Paytm, and PhonePe, as well as those using the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), continue to receive a 20% fare discount. The availability of digital ticketing and attractive fare concessions has significantly boosted metro usage while encouraging cashless travel.

The metro administration expressed its gratitude to passengers for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of metro trains and stations and for supporting the efficient operation of the city`s rapid transit system.

Chennai Metro Ridership Continues to Grow

The latest figures demonstrate the steady growth in Chennai Metro`s popularity over the past two years.

July 2025: 10,378,835 passengers (first time monthly ridership crossed 10 million)

March 2026: 10,197,604 passengers

July 2026: 10,637,647 passengers (new all-time monthly record)

The consistent increase in ridership is attributed to Chennai Metro`s punctual services, enhanced connectivity, comfortable travel experience, digital ticketing options, and fare discounts. With the ongoing Phase II Metro expansion, passenger numbers are expected to rise further as new corridors become operational, connecting more residential and commercial areas across Chennai.
