Heavy Rain Alert for 15 Districts in Tamil Nadu; Southwest Monsoon Likely to Begin Over Kerala

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days, with heavy rain alerts issued for 15 districts including Tenkasi and Tirunelveli.

According to the weather department, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to begin over Kerala around June 4, 2026, bringing increased rainfall activity across South India.

A trough extending from central India to North Tamil Nadu through Vidarbha, Telangana and Rayalaseema is currently influencing weather conditions across the region.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Forecast

The weather department stated that light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on June 3 and June 4.

Kanyakumari district is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period.

Districts Likely to Receive Heavy Rain

On June 3 and 4, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph is likely in:

- Tenkasi and Tirunelveli hill areas

-  Tiruppur
-  Dindigul
-  Erode
-  Salem
-  Dharmapuri
-  Krishnagiri
-  Tirupattur
-  Vellore
-  Ranipet
-  Tiruvannamalai

The weather department also forecast heavy to very heavy rain on June 5 and 6 in Kanyakumari, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, along with heavy rain in Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Erode, Salem, Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts.

On June 7, Kanyakumari district is expected to continue receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall, while several western and southern districts may witness thunderstorms and heavy rain.

Chennai Weather Forecast

For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy on June 3 and June 4. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in some parts of the city.

The maximum temperature in Chennai is expected to hover around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may remain around 28 to 29 degrees Celsius.

Fishermen Warning

The weather department has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea on June 3 due to strong winds expected over South Tamil Nadu coastal areas, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Kumari Sea regions. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph and gust up to 60 kmph at times.
