Marina Heritage Corridor Project Progresses Rapidly Along Kamarajar Road

Posted on: 17/Dec/2025 12:12:13 PM

The Marina Heritage Corridor project is progressing at a fast pace along Kamarajar Road in the Marina Beach area, under the supervision of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). The project aims to enhance infrastructure in the Marina Beach stretch while carefully preserving its historical and cultural heritage.

The development work, being carried out at a total cost of ₹18.45 crore, covers a 3.2-kilometre stretch from the Labour Statue to the Lighthouse.

As part of the project, a 4 metre wide pedestrian walkway, inspired by traditional designs, is being constructed along the stretch. A dedicated cycling track will also be integrated into the walkway to encourage eco-friendly travel and recreational activities.

To enhance the visitor experience, viewing platforms will be built at nine key locations, including Chennai University, Ezhilagam, Presidency College, Ice House, Vivekananda House, Queen Mary’s College, the DGP’s Office and the Lighthouse, allowing pedestrians to enjoy panoramic views of Marina Beach.

In addition, pedestrian pathways will be developed to connect nine bus stops and three police stations located on both sides of Kamarajar Road, improving accessibility and safety. The project also includes a separate cycling track equipped with streetlights and exhibition-style artwork along the surroundings.

At present, 2.3 km of the walkway is under construction, with 800 metres already completed. Work is progressing at full speed at four of the nine bus stops. Officials have stated that around 50% of the project has been completed, and all works are expected to be completed by the end of January next year.

The Marina Heritage Corridor project is expected to significantly enhance public spaces along the iconic beachfront while maintaining the area’s historic charm.
