Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced tunnel boring work for the Metro rail corridor between Panagal Park and Boat Club using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) named ‘Mayil’. The work officially began on Friday as part of Chennai Metro Phase 2 expansion.

Currently, Chennai Metro operates on two corridors, while construction is underway for three additional corridors covering a total length of 118.9 km. Under Corridor 4, stretching from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass, underground tunnel construction is progressing up to the Kodambakkam flyover. The project is being executed in two packages, with nearly 16 km of tunnels laid in both directions using four TBMs.

The ‘Mayil’ TBM is specifically deployed for tunnelling between Marina Lighthouse and Boat Club. Notably, the same machine had earlier completed tunnelling work for a 2 km stretch between Panagal Park and Arcot Road (Meenakshi College). Senior officials of CMRL and consultants participated in the tunnel launch event, marking another milestone in Chennai Metro Phase 2 development
