Bay of Bengal Weather System Intensifies: Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Tamil Nadu

A deep depression over the North Andaman Sea is moving west-northwestward and is expected to strengthen into a depression over the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather system is likely to move towards the Westcentral Bay of Bengal on September 22 and gradually intensify. Its development is expected to influence rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu.

Heavy Rain in 21 Districts

Today, heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 40–50 kmph is likely at isolated places in 21 Tamil Nadu districts. The affected districts include:

The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Sivaganga, Thanjavur, Madurai, Cuddalore, Tirupattur, Vellore and Tiruchirappalli.

Puducherry and Karaikal may also experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

Chennai Weather Today

Chennai and its suburbs are expected to remain partly cloudy today. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is possible in a few parts of the city during the evening or night.

The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to remain around 35–36°C, while the minimum temperature may be around 26–27°C.
