Chennai is set to witness major traffic relief as the long-pending East Tambaram Bypass Road project has regained momentum. The project is expected to significantly reduce heavy traffic congestion in key southern suburban areas including Perungalathur and Tambaram.
The proposed bypass road is designed to divert heavy vehicles arriving from southern districts away from crowded city roads, improving traffic flow and reducing travel time for commuters.
9-Km Six-Lane Bypass Road for Chennai Traffic Relief
The new bypass road will be developed as a six-lane corridor stretching nearly 9 kilometres. The route will begin near the old Peerkankaranai police station on GST Road and pass through:
- Sadhanandapuram
- Alapakkam
- Nedunkundram
- Thiruvanchery
- Rajakilpakkam
- Selaiyur
before connecting with the Tambaram–Velachery Road.
The project is expected to provide direct connectivity to South Chennai and major IT corridor regions, easing urban traffic pressure.
Rs 208 Crore Flyover Construction Underway
As part of the project, a major six-lane flyover is now being constructed from Agaram Then Road Ambedkar Nagar Junction to Velachery Road via Rajakilpakkam Lake.
Key Project Details:
Flyover length: 1,442 metres
Width: 23 metres
Estimated cost: Rs 208.31 crore
Expected completion: 18 months
To facilitate construction, 126 buildings near Rajakilpakkam Lake have already been demolished, and foundation work is currently in progress.
Major Benefits of the Tambaram Bypass Project
Once completed, the East Tambaram Bypass Road project is expected to:
