Due to the increased inflow from catchment areas following renewed rainfall, the Water Resources Department has once again released surplus water from Puzhal Lake, one of Chennai’s main drinking water sources.

The lake, with a total capacity of 3,300 million cubic feet (mcft) and a height of 21.20 feet, currently holds 2,707 mcft of water at a level of 18.49 feet, with an inflow of 556 cubic feet per second (cusecs).

As of 8 a.m. today, 250 cusecs of surplus water is being released. Officials said the outflow will be adjusted based on inflow levels. The district administration has issued a flood warning to residents in low-lying areas along the Puzhal surplus water canal.
