Radha Nagar Railway Subway Opened at Chromepet

Posted on: 08/Jan/2026 11:59:22 AM

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated the long-pending Radha Nagar railway subway (LC-27) at Chromepet, bringing major relief to commuters.

The newly opened subway is 250 metres long and 7 metres wide, with a 3-metre-wide pedestrian pathway connecting both the eastern and western sides directly to Chromepet railway station and ticket counters. The design allows buses to drop passengers close to the platforms, ensuring smooth and safe pedestrian access.

The project was first launched in 2010 during the DMK regime under former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, but remained stalled for nearly a decade after only the railway portion was completed. Following a petition by Pallavaram MLA I Karunanidhi, the court ordered the revival of the project, leading to the issue of a ₹17-crore tender in 2019.

Officials said the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) played a key role in resolving coordination issues between Southern Railway, the Highways Department and the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation. CUMTA also redesigned bus stops, footpaths, ticket counters, road markings and signage, ensuring integrated development of the Chromepet station area and enabling the project’s completion
