The Elephant Gate Bridge in Chennai is now making news!!
This bridge forms an important link between north Chennai and central Chennai is known fact. It is now said that the much delayed construction of this bridge would be completed by the end of the month of August. This was according to some sources from the Southern Railways.
In the Parliament yesterday, Mr. Dayanidhi Maran, Chennai central MP, DREW the attention of the Union railways minister to the delay in the completion of this Elephant Gate Bridge project.
Information collected is that SR has joined hands with GCC in executing this project in Chennai on a 50:50 sharing basis and was hoping to start the crucial launching of the girders connecting the piers across the 7 railway lines to and from Chennai Central in April.
It must be recalled that the Elephant Gate Bridge construction works began in 2019 but the works have been delayed and atleast 3 deadlines were missed.
Till February 2023, the lockdown as well as financial issues of the contractor were responsible for the delay in the construction works. This was as per some sources belonging to Railways.
Truth is that the SR has overcome the technical challenges in executing the project due to the enormity of the project. He spoke about how it was a unique structure constructed over all 7 to 8 railway lines leading to and from Central Chennai. He added that the girders must be launched over the lines. Blocking of all the 6 lines was required for the girder launch and this was as per the original plan.
Now, reworking of the launching plan has been done and by this just one line would be blocked for 35 to 40 days. At present, for the launching of the girders site preparation have been going on.
