From this 1st April onwards - Surprising decision taken now by MTC in Chennai?

Posted on: 13/Mar/2023 9:10:24 AM
The National Vehicle Scrapping Policy of the union government would come into effect from 1st of April and in this scenario MTC has taken an important decision. Point is that MTC would stop operating those buses that are  15 years.

Now, as many as 529 buses in the fleet are older than 15 years and this was mentioned by an official from MTC. It was later explained by a senior officer belonging to MTC that the MTC buses would be scrapped soon following the notification from the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways. He spoke about how as per the notification all the vehicles owned by central/state govts, buses owned by transport corporations/public sector undertakings etc that are older than 15 years would be deregistered and scrapped from 1st of April 2023.

In 2022, MTC authorities etc began to prepare a list of buses to be scrapped and till now 529 MTC buses are found to be more than 15 years old. After getting the permission from the government, these 529 buses would be de-registered and by this pollutants emission would come down. Nine hundred MTC buses out of a total of three thousand four hundred and thirty six buses were not operated in Chennai due to lack of drivers/conductors etc. The scrapping of 529 MTC buses would not affect the services.

The scrapping of MTC buses did not go down well with many. The CITU president Mr. A. Soundarajan there is no need to scrap the buses when there is a need for more buses. He added that MTC staff vacancies must be filled up as it was very important. By scrapping the buses, the government would be increasing the burden on the public and on the transport corporation employees etc. Running private buses on a contract basis would affect the students, women etc who get concessions etc.
