Chennai Road Safety Plan from CUMTA - Know about the new parking policy in Chennai!!

Posted on: 13/Mar/2023 9:09:04 AM
In the future, the Chennai residents would not be able to park their vehicles wherever they want!!

Now, CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority is making news as it wants to streamline parking management  and make the roads more commutable.

The news is that CUMTA has proposed a parking policy for the entire expanded CMA or Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is learnt that CMA is set to be expanded to cover more than 5900 sq km. It is still very challenging to provide space for parking for the increasing vehicle population in the city especially for the urban developers.

Under the Chennai City Partnership Programme funded by the World Bank, a parking policy of 5904 sq km would be prepared. This was as per an officer belonging to the housing and urban development department. He revealed that in the meeting with the representatives of the funding agency, CUMTA proposed to prepare a parking policy among other transport oriented studies. The pattern of parking across the CMA would be taken into account by the transport authority for preparing the parking policy.

It is now brought out that this parking policy would be laying down the rules and regulations for the implementation of parking related projects including methods for monetisation, partnerships etc. To male the city roads safer, CUMTA would also be preparing a Chennai Road Safety Plan.

Previously, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation proposed to prepare a similar parking policy for the corporation limits of 426 sq km.  In October 2021, the state municipal administration and water supplies department conducted a meeting but the truth is that the meeting was stalled.

It must be recalled that an announcement was made by the then ruling party to establish an integrated parking management system at a cost of Rs 2000 crores in the GCC limits.
