Chennai city water resource Poondi Reservoir: excess water released to maintain a capacity of 6000 cft!

The officials of the Department of Water Resources informed that the excess water released from the Poondi Water reservoir at 19000 cft, reducing the capacity of the reservoir to 6000 cft.  250 cft of water has been released to the Puzhal water reservoir through the linking canal.

Poondi reservoir is one of the main sources of drinking water for Chennai Metro City! There has been heavy and persistent rain caused by cyclone Mandous! As such, and the inflow of Krishna River water, all the reservoirs and other water resources are filled to the brim!

As such, out of the full capacity of 3231 million cft, the reservoir has 2950 million cft.  Further, with the increasing inflow of water, 10000 cft of water was released for the dam safety purpose as ordered by the District Collector.

Subsequently, as the inflow of rainwater reduced, from midnight on Sunday (11th December), 10000 cft of water was released reducing the capacity to 3000 cft and so far, 7000 cft of water has been released.

Further, to meet the demands of the drinking water requirements of the Chennai citizens, 250 cft of water has been released to the Puzhal water reservoir through the linking canal.

A total of 424 mm at an average of 22.28% rain has been recorded.
