Amazing change that will be done at the Chennai airport soon!!

The existing international terminal at the Chennai airport would be converted into a domestic terminal after a new integrated terminal gets commissioned. The AAI or Airport Authority of India officials have been planning this. It is said that the international operations would be shifted to the new terminal T2 that would be commissioned in December.

In the future, the Chennai airport would have 2 domestic terminals and together they would be able to handle 19million passengers per year. Currently, the airport can handle only 10million passengers.

From 2013 onwards, the existing international terminal departure hall present at the ground floor has been lying unused only. Truth is that this departure hall has been considered unfit for the foreign travellers.

It is now believed that by turning the entire building (departures on the first floor and arrivals on the ground floor) into domestic terminal, the airport would be able to use the building to full capacity. This would then lead to easing of the peak hour congestion and more passengers could be handled easily. As per Mr. Sharad Kumar, airport director, said it was clear that the present international terminal T4 would be modified for use as a domestic terminal. Immigration and customer counters would be removed and baggage conveyors would be changed.

After the modification, the terminal at the airport in Chennai would be able to handle 9 million passengers per year. The modification work would be carried out after the commissioning of the new integrated terminal. The airport director hinted that some of the domestic flights would be shifted to the converted building in the peak hours. He concluded that the congestion at the peak hours would reduce and more flights would be handled. Point to be noted is that the new integrated terminal T2 has been constructed in the space between T1 and T4.
