Chennai is known for its hot and sultry weather. For the last few days, the weather has been chilly in the city. This has been surprising many residents now. The power demand in the Chennai city has come down now by about 20% due to this cool weather conditions. On Wednesday noon, the power demand in chennai was at 2141MW.

The low pressure area or LPA forming over the coast of north TN over the Bay of Bengal has been responsible for the  below normal temperature in Chennai in the past week. The temperature in Chennai has gone down by 5 degrees Celsius is known.

Some sources from Tangedco have revealed that the cooler temperatures in Chennai have led to reduction in the power demand now by about 20percent to 2300 MW to 2400 MW. The cooler temperatures have led to lesser usage of air-conditioners etc and then to the drop in the power demand.

Normally during the monsoon period, the power demand in Chennai would be from 2500 MW to 2700 MW. It must be noted that on 22nd of November the power demand was 2465 MW and it was 2346 on 21st of November. On Sunday, the demand for power in the city came down to a low of 2013 MW. On 14th of June in 2022, the power demand in Chennai was at its all time high of 3763 MW.

Across the other places in Tamil Nadu, the power demand was the same as not much rain was recorded.

The cold winds from northern parts were drawn to the southern regions and this was due to the development of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, its subsequent concentration into a depression and its movement towards TN coast. This was explained by the Meteorological department. It was later mentioned by some officers from IMD that from 19th to 1st November in Chennai gusty winds with speeds reachign 35kmph to 40kmph were recorded. Information collected was that the combined effect of cold air from the north, along with strong gusty winds and cloudy conditions etc have led to below normal temperatures in the Chennai city.
