Important Info regarding the date of starting of monsoon and shelters being ready etc in TN!!

In the last week of October month, the NE monsoon is likely to begin in the state of Tamil Nadu.This was confirmed by the RMC or regional meteorological centre in Chennai.

To accommodate 1.13lakh people in the coastal districts belonging to TN during NE monsoon, as many as 121 multi purpose shelters have been kept ready. This was according to the Revenue minister Mr. KKSSR. Ramachandran. He spoke about how in other districts 4973 schools, community halls and marriage halls have been identified as relief centres for the people during emergencies.

It is superb to note that there would be uninterrupted supply of milk, milk powders, essential commodities etc through several ration shops in TN as a part of monsoon contingency measures.

By 15th October, storm water drain or SWD works would be completed. Information collected is that as many as 2897 earthmovers, 2115 generators, 483 water evacuators, 3915 tree cutting machines, 5900 catamarans, 48100 motor boats, 5800 mechanised boats etc have been kept ready for the sake of relief works.

Normally, in the NE monsoon period that is between October and December months, TN would receive 448mm of rainfall, This time around it is expected that TN would receive 35% to 75% excess rainfall.

It is noteworthy that at Chepauk in Chennai for a full 24 hours, a State Control Centre would be functioning and the public could contact toll free number 1070 during emergencies. Toll free number 1077 could be contacted in the districts belonging to TN during emergencies. Whatsapp number 94458 69848 could also be used by the public to give complaints. By the TNSMART app, weather  forecasts would be shared.

In 14 coastal districts and in the Nilgiris district, 65000 first responders have been given disaster management training. In these districts, till now, 1.51 lakh first responders have been identified. As many as 5500 volunteers in the 16 districts (prone to disasters) have been given training to trace the missing people. Point is that 11 teams belonging to NDRF and 5 teams belonging to SDRF have been kept ready. Across the state of TN, 90 helicopter landing centres have been identified and kept ready now.

Based on the weather forecast models, the NE monsoon is likely to start by the fourth week of October and this was brought out by Mr. S. Balachandran, DDGM, Chennai. In several parts of India, the withdrawal of SW monsoon is on now and this would lead to NE monsoon onset. It is known that normally the SE monsoon withdraws by 15th to 20th of October. 

Mr. Balachandran then spoke about how Chennai and its neighbouring districts might receive rainfall for the next few days and this would be due to the presence of cyclonic circulation over coastal AP.
