Chitlapakkam residents sudden fear now!! - Whats the reason behind this?

During the northeast monsoon or NE monsoon, the south Chitlapakkam was experiencing inundation in 2019. Truth is that the authorities haven`t installed the sluice gates on the bypass and it resulted in flooding here. Now, monsoon season is round the corner and the residents belonging to Chitlapakkam are having fear that there could be a repeat of 2019. The residents have asked the department concerned to take the action as soon as possible.

As per an activist named Dayanand Krishnan, inlet and bypass arrangements have been constructed to divert the sewage here and the percentage of pollution gets reduced in the rainy season. He added that the sluice gates were not installed and they must be installed to fill up the Chitlapakkam Lake to full tank level and save rainwater. It is worthy to note that the water instead of entering the lake gets reversed and would lead to inundation in south Chitlapakkam.

The shocking piece of information is that several places like Vaithyalingam Salai, Abraham Lincoln Street, Pradeep Avenue, Karthik Avenue, Balaji Avenue and Shanthi Avenue etc have been flooded for the last 2 years. The fear of the residents belonging to these areas is that even mild rains would lead to water stagnation.

A flood regulator to reach up to the full tank levels has been constructed by the WRD. This was according to a resident of Chitlapakkam. He added that a regulator could be opened and through SWD water could flow into the Sembakkam Lake.

It is noteworthy that though inundation of the water level decreased it has not been put into full use to prevent inundation. It is known that an amount of Rs 5 crores to 6 crores was spent on the project.
