In TN, Omicron sub-variant BA.5 is making its presence felt in a huge way even now!!

The news that has come out now is that in the state of Tamil Nadu Omicron sub-variant BA.5 has been dominating even now.
In the samples analysed in July 2022, less than 5percent of samples had BA.2.75 newer sub-lineage of Omicron virus. The presence of this newer sub-lineage increased to 19.1 % in the samples analysed in the month of August. This was according to the findings of the latest Whole Genome Sequencing or WGS.
Omicron sub-variant BA.5 was dominant in the months of June, July and August across TN and this was brought out by the Directorate of Preventive Medicines WGS-SARS-CoV- 2 variants of concern.
It is learnt that in June 47percent of samples had BA.5 sub-variant form of Omicron virus and in July it was found in 77.9percent of the samples sent for genomic analysis in July. The sub-variant was found in 66.3percent samples in the month of August 2022. In August, more samples had newer sub-lineage BA.2.75 than the samples analysed in the July month. Point is that 4.2 percent of 1650 samples sequenced in July showed the presence of the newer sub-lineage Omicron virus. In August month, 19.1percent samples that were sequenced showed the presence of BA.2.75 sub-lineage variant Omicron virus.
